Sometimes it’s the simple, quiet things that give the best rewards to everyday life. Trying to be organised, some time ago, I labelled this shape a “daily bowl” because they were, and still are used by all my family in our house every day. It’s a lovely shape to throw - using approximately 750g of clay and throw it out to 166mm diameter by 80mm high. However whilst trying to find the calm and fluidity when throwing, with @bbc6music on in the background, and the wood burner roaring, I am always captivated whilst putting the internal curve into each piece, as I imagine how it may be used in the future and trying to ensure that all internal throwing lines will pleasing when the piece is in use #ceramics #pottery #madebyhand #studiopottery #dailybowl

The ‘potters dozen’ presumably taken from the concept of the bakers dozen - making one extra for the natural occurrence of human mistake, preference or selection. So this poor unaccompanied handle was the unselected, unused extra this evening when pairing up handles to some teacups that I’ve been making. All is not lost though as it will be added to the clay reclaim and mixed into the next batch of clay for whatever’s next on my making list. I’ve really enjoyed mixing up my glazes lately. This combination of a zirconium white over traditional celadon has given me great results, but it doesn’t come easily; with glaze crawling issues and relentless alterations to glaze thickness and amount of reduction during the firing, and with every firing offering something to learn from. The piece in this image is a 38cm shallow platter that annoyed me at first as it evidenced my non-intentional varied glaze application….. however, on reflection I think it’s opened a whole area of interest - I can see the clear celadon at the bottom graduating to the zirconium white, and it made me realise that regardless of my intentions; sometimes clay, glaze and firing have the final say. #ceramics #studiopottery #pottery #madebyhand

It’s all a bit topsy-turvy here today! I have these four pieces drying upside down, and pressed into an oval shape. It’s a combination of old and new as I’ve been re-making some oval pouring vessels and really enjoyed the process of coaxing the circular shape into a pleasing oval form. These pieces will be inverted later as they dry, and added to pre-rolled bases. The ribbed pieces also take me back to a method I’ve used in the past that involved using wax resist and my zirconium glaze to emphasise the horizontal ribs. The combination gave me interesting results, and I’m hoping this experimentation leads to new paths. The process of altering the thrown shape pleases my making and motivates me, so I’m happy to ride the swell of momentum. #studiopottery #ceramics #madebyhand

I tend to strive for simplicity with my ceramics; looking for the perfect curve or line. My inspiration has always been studio pottery and it was this influence that inspired me to impress the markings upon the exterior surface of this piece, which has been accentuated by the iron bearing glaze lightly applied over the white base glaze. This bowl is approximately 12.5cm in diameter and 8cm high and is £35 plus postage.

The resulting glaze melt is high and varied, and the combination of atmosphere-induced speckle and amalgamation of glazes are what makes this piece particularly pleasuring to me. *Now Sold* The shape of this bowl may relate back to my student days exploring the interior and exterior of a piece. This bowl rises from a small base and enclosed a glazed interior surface. Slip is applied to the interior of the bowl before glazing; this is done on a wheel with a brush and the swirl from the brush is clearly evident beneath the blue celadon glazed surface. This piece is approximately 22cm in diameter and 12.5cm high and is £70 plus postage.

The bare exterior is toasted with distinctive flashing where the flame has passed the pot on its passage through the kiln, and the interior has a varied surface due to the reduction atmosphere. This piece is approximately 17cm in diameter and 10cm high and is £35 plus postage.

I then added the two clay lugs towards the shoulder of the piece which I find gives the pot its character. What I liked about this vase are the visible throwing lines between the two, layered glazes. Enjoyed what may be the last wood firing of a rollercoaster of a year. All seems to have gone to plan; after a pretty wet and windy start to the day, the kiln reached cone 10 with a last push some time around 4.30 this afternoon. Cone 10 was flat one side and going over fast on the other, so whilst the decision was probably made subconsciously to end the firing, this piece of wood made its way onto the fire bars as the kiln crash cooled pre brick-up, and a further 48 hour wait for it to cool completely. It was quite interesting to see the the wood releasing its energy with such explosive force. #woodfiring #kiln #ceramics #pottery #studiopottery #madebyhand

After a strange Summer of cancelled and rescheduled shows, I’m looking forward to #potfestinthepark next weekend. My making cycle has been frustrating at times, but on the positive side; the additional time and fewer deadlines has allowed me to experiment with new pieces, along with time to revisit unfinished projects. This image is from my last woodfiring and is three small test bowls working through some ash glaze recipes, with some certainly showing some promise. The lidded piece I’m especially pleased with, is a glaze combination with iron and zirconium plus a small amount of fly ash which leaves a pleasing surface freckled with a few small surface crystals in areas. Well, whilst swerving the most unusual start to any year I can remember, my creativity is definitely starting to gain momentum and I’m really enjoying it. I’ve always loved making tea bowls, since studying at Sunderland University and absorbing the whole studio pottery movement. However, I was often hesitant; as coming from the North East of England and an area more aligned to mugs of tea, it felt chameleon-like to replicate, rather than add to such a fantastic and endlessly interesting area of ceramics. Also I throughly enjoy making them. It’s been a busy and exciting start to 2020 for me. I had a fantastic wood firing in January and have since been busy with a bespoke order for plate which was completed yesterday. Whilst wrapping the pieces, I was pleased to see that the underside of the plates were equally as pleasing as the fronts. I was happy with the glaze combination, and the breaking of the two glazes was exactly as I had hoped when making the pieces. The finish is a combination of a transparent glaze with a zirconium white based glazed layered over the top, fired in reduction and the finish is always variable depending on the application of the glaze. Without the use of the hydrometer the glaze application is reliant upon instinct, whilst also celebrating the differences it creates, resulting in truly unique pieces. #ceramics #potterystudiopottery #madebyhand #tableware

Thought I’d take a moment to photograph this large platter in the glorious sunshine we have here at Wardlow Mires. The Pots and Food Festival was as popular as ever yesterday with an abundance of visitors, and a chance to see lots of great work. Due to the nature of the event I tend to bring more of my functional work with me, and this platter was made with food in mind; and whether it be cheese or salad, I hope it’s a great background for enjoying and serving food. Summer is a busy time for potting; long days to make the most of, and warmer weather to dry the work through the stages needed to complete it. With the Summer also comes great pottery shows; this weekend is Potfest in the Park at Hutton in the Forest. With this show in mind, I’ve been busy making in the studio, firing the wood kiln and selecting pieces to exhibit. Sometimes when preparing work for a show, I want a piece I can talk about, or a piece that actually does the talking for me. This piece is the epitome of why I fire with wood; the marks left on this piece were a delight to find when opening the kiln; and a truly satisfying piece to put out on display to represent what I make, and more importantly, why I make pottery #pottery #ceramics #woodfired #potfestinthepark #studiopottery #madebyhand

I always love making these bowls which are based loosely on a pancheon bowl which was traditionally used in making and preparing bread. My enjoyment of making has been returned with these two pieces which were fired together rim to rim, this helps not only to keep their shape but also helps with packing space in the wood kiln. I do have to keep to some rules as the green celadon can move/run at top temperature, so I always put that on the bottom of the pair with a blue glazed bowl on top to prevent the two sealing together during the firing. There is much enjoyment to be gained from tapping the pair of bowls loose after the firing to see how the glaze has turned out. So “Avian Architecture” is the theme at this year’s @potfest.co.uk at @sconepalace . I’ve really enjoyed making this piece, which has allowed me to not only think about the architecture of a bird house, but also consider the surveying equipment used by architects and engineers in the construction industry and try and bring the two together. A small offering in a small bowl but plenty of excitement and food for thought. Trying to hold down and keep on top of an allotment alongside producing pottery seem to follow similar seasonal paths with the first radishes and salads starting to show some return; my attention is diluted with focus on clay, making and firing for forthcoming shows. Similarly; like Autumnal root veg and tubers stored for the right occasion. These four tea bowls are packed and en route to @hepworthwakefield as part of my current, small display alongside the Magdalene Odundo exhibition “The Journey of Things”. The teabowls are fluidly wheel thrown, which is a refreshing change from my usual straight lines, although I always aim for balance and clarity throughout my work. The glazed finish is a chun over tenmoku combination, which can vary between firings depending upon thickness of the glaze, heat, flamework, position in the kiln and the clay body. Whilst I strive for control, the subtle differences between the four pieces are what make them beautifully unique. For some years at Newcastle college, Ceramics and Fine Art have collaborated on a staff and student show. This year has been even more exciting with the use of a different venue; last night saw the opening of ‘New Myths’; bringing Ceramics and Fine Art together under one roof in the stunning location of The Assembly House in Newcastle City Centre. The Assembly House has a rich history; having being occupied since the 15th Century with a range of habitants and various creative and conventional roles. Whilst the building is undergoing restoration work; still to see today are imperial plasterwork, sliding sash windows, period skirting, architraves, mouldings and frames. All of which provides a great back drop to an eclectic mix of work. #ceramics #fineart #newcastlecollege #theassemblyrooms #newcastle

After two weather related reschedules I’m all packed here at Allendale and the firing is underway. It’s looking like perfect firing conditions with a beautiful morning following a stunning sunrise. There was lots of work packed into the kiln last night; some of my standard tableware alongside some different shapes I’ve enjoyed making. Today marked the first wood firing since my recent

Today marked the first wood firing since my recent house and studio move, which was far more disruptive than anticipated! It was lovely to get a run of pots made in the new studio which were then transported up to Allendale last night to be packed into the wood kiln in preparation for today’s firing.
With the year passing me by so quickly, it was evident that the darker nights are drawing in, and I also had the extra battle of last night’s stormy conditions which made packing the kiln a daunting task although it was pretty atmospheric especially as the electricity kept cutting out as we packed the kiln. The firing today was storm free; with lighter winds and warmer temperatures, therefore allowing a relatively problem free firing. It’s now the waiting game for the kiln to cool, and I’m quite excited to see how some of the pieces in the image have turned out, especially the lidded containers shown in the image with what looks like a hole in the lid - these are temporary lids to prevent too much distortion when being fired and will be replaced by a solid hardwood lid post firing. #ceramics #woodfiring #pottersofinstagram #tableware #madebyhand #studiopottery

Had a great firing last weekend which coincided with the opening of Pots in the Byre at Broadwood Hall, Allendale. After a busy night, both packing the kiln and setting up for the show, it was nice to enjoy the wood firing on the Saturday which seemed to go to plan and was a fantastic opportunity to explain the firing process directly to those visiting the event. The kiln normally takes 36-48 hours to cool and has a variety of work in it. It has however been left bricked up since last weekend, to be opened and unpacked between 11-12 tomorrow for any visitors to the event. #ceramics #woodfired #studiopottery #pottery #pottersofinstagram

2018 has been a great year so far with some fantas

2018 has been a great year so far with some fantastic firings, events and weather! With the early sun and warm weather some vegetables in the garden have really excelled, whilst others did wither in the heat. The broad beans pictured here have been good, as well as peas although few made it as far as the kitchen! Coming through next will be potatoes, beetroot and any remaining salad that hasn’t already bolted in the earlier sunshine. The time of year is doubly good as in a few weeks’ time I truly get to combine two of my favourite things at the aptly named ‘Pots and Food’ festival which takes place at Wardlow Mires in the heart of the Peak District on the 8th and 9th of September. This is a great event with many potters, and fantastic food and drink to indulge in at the event or take away. An image of a piece from my last firing which was exciting to take from the kiln as it was a touch experimental. This bowl shows the results of my regular white glaze with a wollastonite/iron green glaze over the top. Gauging the thickness of each glaze is key for this combination as I enjoy the way the green glaze moves as it melts which add fluidity to the piece, but caution in application is required because if the glaze is too thick it will simply run off the pot and stick it to the kiln shelf. This piece was raised on wadding, which was a good call as it was just enough to catch the glaze about to flow off the pot. This was a pleasing shape to throw and I was happy with the finished piece. #ceramics #studiopottery #pottersofinstagram #potfestinthepark2018

So it’s been quite a busy time after getting a late invite to @potfest.co.uk Potfest in the Park at Hutton in the Forest, which has involved two recent wood firings to get work ready. As always with a firing, I have a plan, although you always want to learn from previous experiences, and try to tailor each firing to individual pieces placed in the kiln. This footage was taken at about 870 degrees as I tried to look at how the flame was going to pass up and around the work and affect the exterior of certain pieces depending upon their location in the kiln. I noticed that while this kiln has opposing fireboxes front and back, it is worth alternating the fireboxes; allowing one to burn while the other one rests.I found this short video was both useful and intriguing and it should hopefully inform and help with future firings.

When you’re planning a exhibition stand you want to exhibit a range of pieces and can sometimes be distracted by looking for the show piece. I’m at Potfest Scotland this weekend @sconepalace with new pots out of a new kiln, and I’m really excited to get feedback on some new shapes and glaze combinations. This is my current white glaze with a wollastonite iron glaze over the top; it has been really responsive to the flame path, showing glassy on direct contact with the flame and satin on the back. It’s been over a week since the kiln was fired; and with a busy schedule I’ve only just managed to collect the pieces. A lovely shot of the kiln as it was unbricked and I’m over the moon with the results. As a potter and a maker, I’m not always happy with some of the results from my firings; and I’m always looking for improvements. With a few recent firings producing some varied results with patches of oxidised work lacking in colour and depth, we changed some things with this firing including the stacking of shelves within the kiln and also reducing the air flow to the ember bed in the firebox. These changes were a touch nerve wracking during the firing; as making changes always comes with an element of risk. However it seems to have paid off this time and I’m really happy with the results. I’m currently organising these pieces in readiness for my forthcoming Summer events and will share some individual pieces from this firing sometime soon..... #ceramics #studiopottery #tableware #woodfiring #pottersofinstagram #madebyhand #pottery

Heading back to the @hepworthwakefield after a fantastic first day at the launch of their Contemporary Ceramics Fair yesterday. The Hepworth gallery lies within the Wakefield Waterfront conservation area, and it is surrounded by a number of industrial buildings made of brick and stone that once housed the town’s cloth and grain industries. The Ceramics Fair is located in the Calder warehouse on the ground floor of the Caddies Wainwright Mill, a 19th century former textiles mill and now a beautiful, contemporary art space. The Hepworth gallery itself sits on a stretch of land trapped between the bend in the river Calder, and is named after the late English artist Barbara Hepworth, who was born in Wakefield in 1903. An image of the finished piece which was shown mid-firing in my previous image. This stoneware bowl was photographed on some stacked wood in light rain, fresh from the kiln. My previous image caught the piece mid firing, and after almost continuous stoking with wood; the kiln reached top temperature of cone 10 (1280-1300 degrees) which was required for the glaze to melt sufficiently enough to breach and start to move down the piece, emphasising the detail and the ridge on the bowl. I was being careful not to over-fire the kiln, however which would have caused the glaze to run off the pot and onto the kiln shelf. Overall it was a good firing with pieces to polish and pack ready for the @hepworthwakefield Contemporary Ceramics Fair this weekend. #ceramics #tableware #studiopottery #pottersofinstagram #madebyhand

Firing today with pots for the @hepworthwakefield Contemporary Craft Fair next weekend. I’m off to a great start, and just trying to keep an eye on the glazes. I get great results by layering a chun glaze over tenmoku, but it can split and crawl at this stage. The crawling in moderation sometimes really makes a piece, but overdone it can literally peel the glaze from the piece, so I’m trying to slow things down which is sometimes easier said than done! #woodfiring #ceramics #tableware #studiopottery #pottersofinstagram

This piece was produced late last year and moved on to a new owner after being on display at Hexham. I loved the piece when it came out of the kiln. The photo doesn’t do the form justice; it was a shallow open bowl but it was the glaze that i found especially interesting, as alongside the general fleck I usually achieve with this combination, was a particularly unusual fleck that I couldn’t help think looked like a bird or a breaching dolphin. As a follow up to my previous image; although the kiln only took around 30 hours to cool, the recent snowfall coupled with the rural location of the wood kiln has meant I’ve just returned to collect my pots from the firing. I was really pleased with finish on this piece, and it’s definitely a glaze I’ll be exploring more in the future. It was interesting to reflect on the image in my previous post which showed the pot in the kiln at around 800 degrees; when I returned to collect my work from the firing the thermometer in the car was reading minus 3! #woodfiring #ceramics #studiopottery #madebyhand

First wood firing of the year at Broadwood Hall. This image was taken through one of the spyholes in the door of the kiln at around 800 degrees. This is a fast fire kiln and takes between 10-12 hours to reach final temperature of 1300 degrees. The piece in the image was an enjoyable form to throw, being loosely based around a moon jar shape. It has an iron oxide chun glaze which I hope will result in a light blue, glassy finish (fingers crossed!). This has been an enjoyable firing for me, as I have been experimenting with some new shapes and forms and I’m looking forward to seeing the results once the kiln has cooled. #woodfiring #fastfire #kiln #ceramics #studiopottery

New Year, new start. January can sometimes be a slow starter in terms of making as I always like to have a good tidy up in the studio, organise my thoughts and have a clean through before any making begins. However, the temptation to get on the wheel is always there and it’s nice to familiarise myself with some key shapes and pieces to get the ball rolling for a wood firing towards the end of the month. These images show a start on some smaller coffee mugs and some soup bowls which will both have their handles attached once they have firmed up. After the excesses of December, it’s a refreshing change to enjoy a fresh salad with dinner tonight. However I didn’t want to be too virtuous, and so the salad was accompanied by a large, hot and spicy pizza! This salad is served on one of my prototype stoneware platters which has been a versatile and well used piece in our kitchen. I’m looking to design and make some bigger platters this year, and may even invest in some larger kiln shelves in order to enable this. My aim is to make uncomplicated, honest pots; and looking for balance and composition within simple pottery form is a never ending, yet utterly rewarding challenge for me. I've just collected my work from last weekend's wood firing, and wanted to share some footage of my daily bowls. These pieces are fired rim-to-rim in the kiln, this firstly frees up precious space in the wood kiln, as well as protecting the pieces from debris during the firing process. Tapping the pieces apart can be a nervewracking yet satisfying process, as the fly ash in the kiln partially seals the pieces until they are tapped apart to reveal the glaze inside. The exterior of the pieces are unglazed stoneware which take on their toasty hues from the flame and ash passing the pieces during the firing process. The interior of the bowl is glazed with a blue celadon over a white slip. I fire the kiln in reduction which provides the required atmosphere to achieve the blue glaze. This is evident in 4 of the bowls, however the middle two pieces have a slightly less intense blue glaze due to their location in the kiln where they have received less reduction. #ceramics #tableware #bowls #craftsmanship #madebyhand #studiopottery

I've been trying a new glaze combination which is a zirconium silicate white over a blue celadon on this shallow serving platter. I'm happy with the subtle breaks between the two glazes and the addition of the unpredictable heavy iron spot which is caused by a fleck of iron in the clay body, which reveals itself during the reduction firing. I'm looking forward to trying this glaze combination on larger, deeper serving platters that I'm currently developing for comfort food recipes during the winter months. #ceramics #tableware #foodie #studiopottery #craftsmanship

A lovely harvest of apples taken from the trees beside the wood kiln at Allendale, served in a medium stoneware bowl from the last wood firing. I make these particular bowls in multiples of two and they are fired rim to rim in the kiln so that the exterior of both bowls is exposed to the flame path during the wood firing, whilst the interiors remain concealed. Firing rim to rim also ensures that the bowls remain round during the firing and finally it also saves valuable space in the kiln. Firing the bowls rim to rim also results in a satisfying procedure when removed from the kiln - whereby the bowls will either come apart very easily or if the fly ash has temporarily stuck the rims together they will require a few taps from a wooden baton against the rims of both bowls, to enable them to come apart and reveal the glassy celadon glaze within. #ceramics #woodfiring #tableware #studiopottery #craftsmanship

The shape is loosely based on a chawan - a traditional Japanese tea bowl, with my own addition of a double curve to the exterior wall, which I incorporated in the hope that it would combine successfully with the selected glaze during its reduction firing.
The glaze is a combination of a chun and a tenmoku, which has worked well across the piece; I was especially happy with the way the glaze has broken across the surface and hugged the ribbed curve of the exterior wall. #ceramics #tableware #craftsmanship #studiopottery

The handles have been pulled separately and I'm waiting for them to dry and harden before attaching them to the body of the mug. A gas reduction fired dinner plate made as part of a set for a recent commission. I really enjoy making plates, mainly because they encourage me to be patient and enjoy the processes of throwing, trimming, drying and firing. As with all plates, the piece in the image has been dried slowly and evenly to prevent warping and cracking, it was then slowly fired to 1000 degrees, and allowed to cool before being glazed and returned to the kiln for its glaze firing up to 1290 degrees. Plates take up a lot of space in the kiln, not only because of their physical shape and size but also because of the horizontal space needed in between each piece to ensure even air and heat circulation. I can fire many bowls, cups and other smaller pieces in the same space that one or two plates command. However, when it works, and the finished piece is how you hoped; all of the time, effort and precious space in the kiln becomes worthwhile...... #ceramics #handmade #studiopottery #tableware

Occasionally I'll make, glaze, and fire a pot and all three processes work exactly the way I hope they will! This stoneware bowl has been wheel thrown, and then wood fired to 1300 degrees. It has been glazed on the interior with celadon and the flecks in the glaze are ash deposits which have settled during the wood firing process. The exterior of the bowl has deliberately been left unglazed to take on the effects of the flame during the firing and I was particularly happy with the toasting around the rim of the bowl as well as the flashing on the exterior; showing where the flame has passed by the pot, leaving its permanent mark #ceramics #tableware #studiopottery
